While keeping in mind current fashion trends and emerging styles in digital fashion, it is essential to develop a unique aesthetic and identity to differentiate yourself from other digital fashion designers. Experiment with different styles, shapes, textures, and colors to create a distinct visual language that resonates with you. Be willing to experiment and push boundaries. Design Tips

  • Gather tons of inspiration for your brief! Pinterest is a great place to pull references from, but always keep your eyes peeled in day to day life as well. Inspiration is everywhere. Take note of outfits that inspire you in real life and on the internet. Look to nature, movies, celebrities, and even animals to guide your vision.
  • Some great search terms for Pinterest are "aesthetic," "editorial," and "runway." Tacking these words onto the ends of your searches usually gives more curated results.
  • When you find an image you like on Pinterest, make sure to click on it and scroll underneath it to find images with related aesthetics. Keep clicking on images to get yourself into a rabbit hole of inspiration. It's also good to create curated boards on Pinterest for specific projects. It can act as a helpful visual mood board, and you can click on "more ideas" to find similar images that you can add.
  • When designing digital fashion, really think outside of the box and think about any limitations you experience physically that could be solved digitally. For example, using unconventional materials that may be too expensive for production in real life, or materials that may not even be possible to create clothing out of in real life.
  • Details are everything! Add an unexpected twist that really gives your pieces a wow factor.
  • We want people's digital fashion to inspire their physical fashion rather than the other way around. Your pieces should be so expressive and unique to the digital world that it inspires someone to have more fun and take more risks in real life because they're so in love with their dream digital closet.
note

As a starting point, please familiarize yourself with the wearables categories that Genies offer and understand our technical requirements and limitations. Pick one asset type to test the waters of digital fashion possibilities or dive in fully and create a full wearable collection!

Prior to jumping into 3D modeling, gather your visual references. PureRef is a great free software for that, but you can also do a Pinterest board or even a Google slides doc.
